If you tried calling a Norfolk school Thursday morning, you weren't alone. Internet and phone service went out at all Norfolk Public Schools facilities and was back by 9:42 a.m., according to a district news release. Spectrum's preliminary information points to work at an off-site data center that affected its equipment outside the district's network.

“Our schools remained open and our staff continued to serve students throughout the interruption.”

Superintendent Jeff Rose

The disruption also affected municipal services for the City of Norfolk and several local businesses. On Election Day, the city's general registrar said election workers couldn't get websites to load, video calls dropped and they got kicked out of state-approved databases, so staff activated an emergency response plan.

  • Earlier glitches: intermittent, partial interruptions Nov. 3 and 4
  • City Hall cause, per Spectrum: Tuesday power interruption at a facility
  • Next step: the district reviews Spectrum's formal report

Norfolk's internet trouble stretched across three days

  1. Nov. 3Election Day: internet problems hit City Hall; schools see intermittent interruptions.
  2. Nov. 4Norfolk Public Schools see more intermittent, partial interruptions.
  3. Nov. 5An outage hits all Norfolk Public Schools facilities at about 8:23 a.m.
  4. Nov. 5Internet and phone service are restored by 9:42 a.m.
