ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday morning at 6:23 a.m.—coast guard, the Virginia Port Authority, and fire crews responded to a boat fire in the 400 block of Water St near the Renaissance Portsmouth-Norfolk Waterfront Hotel, and a dog was rescued from the cabin while the boat was found empty.  WAVY
  • A house fire on Norcova Avenue around 2:17 a.m. Saturday left 13 people homeless and investigators noted that smoke detectors did not sound because most of the blaze burned outside — the American Red Cross is helping eight adults, five children and a dog.  3 WTKR

CRIME NEWS

  • Portsmouth police said one person died and three were injured in a shooting at the Dahlia—Manly Streets intersection on Saturday morning, and the investigation remains active.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Virginia Arts Festival in Norfolk announced its fall lineup featuring the Attucks Jazz series performing at Attucks Theatre between Sept. and March, the award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir performing ‘Peace’ on Oct. 12 at Ferguson Center and Oct. 14 at Attucks Theatre, and the Step Afrika! dance show set for Oct. 23 at Chrysler Hall—tickets are on sale now.  WAVY

SPORTS NEWS

  • ODU beat North Carolina Central by a score of 54 to 6 Saturday night in their home opener as running back Trequan Jones set a school record with a 93 yard touchdown run and quarterback Colton Joseph threw for 257 yards & three touchdowns before leaving in the third quarter. The Monarchs gained 545 total yards and used a strong defense to secure their first win of the season.  WAVY
