Norfolk police responded to a barricade call on Ardmore Road on May 22nd at 11:15 a.m.—officers found a man in a mental health crisis and took him into custody before transporting him to a medical facility, and no injuries were reported.
Norfolk Botanical Garden was voted the best Butterfly House in the United States by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.
The Butterfly House began as a temporary exhibit in 2009 and now welcomes over 45,000 visitors each year while open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
On May 5, the Elizabeth River Project lost $75,000 from NOAA’s Chesapeake Bay-Watershed Education and Training program, which helped fund conservation field trips for Portsmouth 6th graders — the group said it will work with schools and universities and seek community support to keep its programs running.
NOAA said that between June 1 and November 30, 13 to 19 named tropical storms will form—6 to 10 will become hurricanes and 3 to 5 will turn into major storms.
Officials warned inland communities to prepare for severe weather after Hurricane Helene caused heavy flooding last year.
On Saturday, May 31, WHRO and Elizabeth River Project will host World Otter Day at Ryan Resilience Lab in Norfolk with guided tours at 10:15 a.m., story time at 10:30 a.m., an otter spotter presentation at 11 a.m., kids crafts, EcoDistrict info and River Star Home sign-ups.
The event celebrates local river otters and the river's recovery—offering all ages a chance to learn how urban wildlife thrives.
