CRIME NEWS

  • Norfolk police responded to a barricade call on Ardmore Road on May 22nd at 11:15 a.m.—officers found a man in a mental health crisis and took him into custody before transporting him to a medical facility, and no injuries were reported.  City of Norfolk

CULTURE NEWS

  • Norfolk Botanical Garden was voted the best Butterfly House in the United States by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards. The Butterfly House began as a temporary exhibit in 2009 and now welcomes over 45,000 visitors each year while open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.  City of Norfolk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On May 5, the Elizabeth River Project lost $75,000 from NOAA’s Chesapeake Bay-Watershed Education and Training program, which helped fund conservation field trips for Portsmouth 6th graders — the group said it will work with schools and universities and seek community support to keep its programs running.  13 News Now
  • NOAA said that between June 1 and November 30, 13 to 19 named tropical storms will form—6 to 10 will become hurricanes and 3 to 5 will turn into major storms. Officials warned inland communities to prepare for severe weather after Hurricane Helene caused heavy flooding last year.  WHRO
  • On Saturday, May 31, WHRO and Elizabeth River Project will host World Otter Day at Ryan Resilience Lab in Norfolk with guided tours at 10:15 a.m., story time at 10:30 a.m., an otter spotter presentation at 11 a.m., kids crafts, EcoDistrict info and River Star Home sign-ups. The event celebrates local river otters and the river's recovery—offering all ages a chance to learn how urban wildlife thrives.  WHRO
