  • Norfolk Animal Care Center’s Waggin’ Wheels Mobile Pet Pantry will visit Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch Library on May 10 to distribute free pet food, supplies, and resources while stocks last — the event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Roger Loria, a Holocaust survivor and retired professor, will share his account of fleeing Nazi persecution at 7 p.m. today at the MacArthur Memorial Visitor Center in Norfolk (marking the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory in Europe). He will recall his escape from Antwerp with his mother as a toddler (a story that highlights the enduring lesson against hate).  WHRO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Williamsburg-James City County school board tabled any plans to rename James Blair Middle School after a community survey showed support for keeping the current name—only two board members pressed for change despite concerns over its namesake. The board also hired Acting Superintendent Daniel Keever whose contract begins on June 1.  WHRO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The World Meteorological Organization released a list of 21 names for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season that omits letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z and will use an auxiliary list if needed. The letter I has 13 retired storm names—11 since 2000—and the next I storm, Imelda, is set to form during the peak season.  13 News Now
