CRIME NEWS

  • A Norfolk jury convicted Eddie Lee Simon, 30, on Thursday for raping his former coworker after a 2023 house party—his sentencing hearing is set for July 25.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chesapeake native Adam Ross will dance in the Momix show 'Alice' that retells Lewis Carroll’s tale with acrobatic moves and creative effects. The show will run Wednesday at Chrysler Hall in Norfolk and Friday at Ferguson Center for the Arts—tracing his path from local training to a national stage—offering a unique live performance.  Daily Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Norfolk Park Rangers have planned a series of educational programs for April that will offer local residents learning opportunities—details are available on the park calendar and Facebook page.  City of Norfolk
  • On March 19, the Norfolk School Board adopted Superintendent Dr. Sharon Byrdsong’s $772.9M budget that gives full-time contracted staff a 4.5% raise, raises teacher starting pay from $57,500 to $60,088, and offers a 2.2% bonus for top-paid employees—adding funds for a new Equity and Excellence Learning Center at Southside STEM Academy and extra security measures. The budget also invests $253M in school renovations and buses, while City Council will adopt a municipal budget in May and plans to develop a school consolidation strategy by August 2026.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Norfolk City Council voted 7-1 to approve The Station Apartments, a 154-unit affordable housing project near Park Place, during a Tuesday meeting. The development will transform two empty lots along 26th and 27th streets, Monticello Avenue and Church Street—adding units for city workers while some local residents in a historically Black neighborhood raised concerns about its impact.  Daily Press

  • Norfolk Tides secured their first win of the year on Sunday when rehabilitating All-Star Gunnar Henderson hit a three-run homer that sparked a six-run eighth inning at Harbor Park—4,759 fans saw the Tides beat Durham 8-2. The team will face Charlotte in a six-game series starting Tuesday at 6:35 p.m.  Daily Press
