COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Norfolk Animal Care Center and Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center launched a SLAM DUNK Adoption Special offering puppies and adult dogs half-off at $35 and waiving fees for senior dogs from March 20 to April 2. The shelter is at capacity—adoption hours are 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Wednesdays and the address is 5585 Sabre Rd.  City of Norfolk

CULTURE NEWS

  • Naro movie theater in Norfolk is showing the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land" today at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4:15 p.m. The film, which examines forced displacement in the West Bank between 2019 and 2023 and has sparked controversy, is being screened after many customer requests.  The Virginian-Pilot

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia school divisions are planning next fiscal year’s budgets while relying on the $2.4 billion federal funding they receive to support key programs. Officials warn that if staffing cuts at the Department of Education lead to reduced funds, local districts may need to find new money — a move that could burden less-resourced schools.  WHRO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A coalition of scientists and conservation groups released the U.S. State of the Birds report on March 20th that showed Virginia birds declined in line with national trends, with coastal shorebirds suffering losses from rising sea levels and Eastern forest birds losing habitat from modern silvicultural practices. The report noted over three billion birds have been lost since 1970 and a 43% rebound in the American oystercatcher (achieved by managing predators on barrier islands) as a rare positive outcome.  WHRO
  • Norfolk residents can drop off household hazardous waste, e-waste and other items at Norfolk Recycles Day—a free drive-through event hosted at Azalea Baptist Church located at 3314 E. Little Creek Rd.—from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 5, and proof of residency may be required.  City of Norfolk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin said today that the current management contract to keep Jefferson Lab open will be extended while the Department of Energy rebids for a new contract—ensuring the facility remains operational after the contract, which was set to expire in May, reaches its end.  The Virginian-Pilot

SPORTS NEWS

  • Norfolk State guard Diamond Johnson was named BoxToRow HBCU Player of the Year and earned first-team All-America honors as coach Larry Vickers was named Co-Coach of the Year and teammate Kierra Wheeler also made the All-America team. Johnson averaged 19 points per game and helped lead her team to a 30-4 record this season.  The Virginian-Pilot
