Good morning, Norfolk. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Norfolk Animal Care Center and Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center launched a SLAM DUNK Adoption Special offering puppies and adult dogs half-off at $35 and waiving fees for senior dogs from March 20 to April 2. The shelter is at capacity—adoption hours are 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day except Wednesdays and the address is 5585 Sabre Rd.  City of Norfolk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia school divisions are planning next fiscal year’s budgets while relying on the $2.4 billion federal funding they receive to support key programs. Officials warn that if staffing cuts at the Department of Education lead to reduced funds, local districts may need to find new money — a move that could burden less-resourced schools.  WHRO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A coalition of scientists and conservation groups released the U.S. State of the Birds report on March 20th that showed Virginia birds declined in line with national trends, with coastal shorebirds suffering losses from rising sea levels and Eastern forest birds losing habitat from modern silvicultural practices. The report noted over three billion birds have been lost since 1970 and a 43% rebound in the American oystercatcher (achieved by managing predators on barrier islands) as a rare positive outcome.  WHRO
  • Norfolk residents can drop off household hazardous waste, e-waste and other items at Norfolk Recycles Day—a free drive-through event hosted at Azalea Baptist Church located at 3314 E. Little Creek Rd.—from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 5, and proof of residency may be required.  City of Norfolk
