ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts warn gardeners that invasive plants in Hampton Roads and across Virginia hurt local plants and animals by outgrowing native species—Beach Vitex, for example, can harm sea turtle nesting. The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation said the state is home to 90 invasive species that cost about $1 billion each year for removal.  13 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Southeastern Public Service Authority is set to finalize a contract with Commonwealth Sortation, a company that uses AI and robotics to sort mixed waste and boost recycling for South Hampton Roads cities. Officials expect the deal to raise recycling from 6% to about 20% and repurpose organic waste into biochar—negotiations will continue before member cities renew their agreements in June 2027—while plans to extend the landfill’s life move forward.  The Virginian-Pilot

SPORTS NEWS

  • Norfolk State women earned their highest NCAA tournament seed ever by winning the MEAC and will play Maryland at the Xfinity Center in College Park on Saturday at 4 p.m.—William & Mary secured an automatic bid and will face High Point at Moody Center in Austin on Thursday at 9 p.m.  Daily Press
  • Jerry Greenlaw of Alexandria won the Shamrock Marathon on Sunday morning in Virginia Beach—he finished in 2 hours, 27 minutes and 28 seconds with a lead of more than six minutes. Staci Huelat from Wellington, Florida won the women’s division in 2:55:00 while David Gregory of Virginia Beach claimed the men’s half marathon title in 1:10:43.  The Virginian-Pilot
  • Several Hampton Road athletes were named to the 2025 VISAA all-state boys basketball teams— including Catholic guard Ashton Walker, a Radford signee— after selections were announced on March 16.  The Virginian-Pilot
  • On Sunday, the NCAA tournament bracket was announced and Virginia schools Norfolk State, VCU, and Liberty earned automatic bids for the 16th straight tournament—each by winning their conference title. Norfolk State will face West No. 1 Florida on Friday in Raleigh while Duke begins its run that same day amid concerns over a key player's injury.  The Virginian-Pilot
  • Hampton University came back to beat Elon 4-3 for its first Coastal Athletic Association softball win, while Norfolk State played two games in one day, winning 5-3 and then losing 13-3 — both teams want to improve as the season goes on.  Daily Press
