CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the only pre-Revolutionary War building in Norfolk, will hold free tours on Thursday, Jan. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its downtown location, offering visitors a chance to explore historic features (such as a cannonball from 1776).  WHRO
  • Coastal Virginia Unitarian Universalists’ racial justice task force will host a Kwanzaa marketplace tomorrow in Virginia Beach featuring local BIPOC-owned businesses and a New Year’s Emancipation Jubilee with a Norfolk State University professor speaking, as it strengthens its social justice mission.  WHRO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Old Dominion University is launching a new institute — focused on nutrition and lifestyle medicine — with curriculum changes underway and a staff search ending this spring. The program will train all medical and nursing students to better prevent chronic illness in the local community.  WHRO

  • Norfolk commuters have a new option as Hampton Roads Transit launches its Vanuary vanpool campaign to ease traffic and lower costs. Eligible groups of five to 15 can share an Enterprise van for $99 a month for four months, then receive a $500 monthly stipend.  13 News Now
  • Federal funding cuts ended Community of Change's Safer Together program that provided support to families impacted by gun violence in the region. The nonprofit has filed an appeal + is seeking new local partnerships to continue its service.  WHRO
