EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, the Norfolk School Board approved a decade-long consolidation plan to close Willoughby Early Childhood Center and Norview Elementary in 2026 to 2027, repurpose Oceanair Elementary as a pre-K center, extend the superintendent search until early February, and increase board salaries by 700%—one member opposed. 13 News Now

- ➤ Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources proposed new guidance to double screen sizes and water velocities at surface water intakes in response to incomplete state data and mounting economic pressures; public comments closed Dec. 17 as researchers warned the changes might further reduce fish protection in Chesapeake Bay habitats. - ➤ Virginia will enforce new vape product restrictions on Dec. 31, requiring all liquid nicotine and vapor products sold locally to be state-approved to avoid $1,000 daily fines per unapproved item. The state directory with approved products is expected on New Year's Eve. 3 WTKR

- ➤ Naval Medical Center Portsmouth now treats both service members and civilians in its Level II trauma center. Operating since August 2023 and approved in 2024, the center has cared for over 1,300 patients — strengthening local health with community hospital partnerships. 3 WTKR
