  • Norfolk reopens outdoor ice skating at a new waterfront location at Towne Bank Fountain Park after the city moved the rink from MacArthur Mall. Visitors can buy tickets online for 75-minute sessions at $17 and enjoy festive extras (fire pits, holiday music, hot chocolate) through January 4.  13 News Now
  • AAA has projected that 81.8 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home from Tuesday through Dec. 1 — 73 million of whom will drive by car. Portsmouth drivers are checking their vehicles as state police plan extra highway patrols and experts advise anyone traveling today to leave before 11 a.m. or after 8 p.m. to avoid heavy traffic.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • WHRO-FM 90.3 will close the WFMT Opera Series this Saturday at 1 p.m. with a luminous performance of Richard Strauss’s romantic comedy Arabella — the production broadcasts live from the Vienna State Opera and features a cast led by Camilla Nylund. The opera series wraps up with Arabella as WHRO-FM gears up to launch the Metropolitan Opera’s new season on December 6.  WHRO
  • WHRO-FM will guide local listeners today with a Thanksgiving Eve program at 9:00 p.m. that features performances by local groups including Viva Vivaldi from Hollins University; on Thanksgiving Day the station will offer shows at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to celebrate music and Virginia traditions.  WHRO
  • This Saturday at 8:00, WHRO-FM will air 'This Just In' where host Raymond Jones presents new recorded classical music including Inbal Megiddo's rendition of Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 and Thomas Pitfield's Concerto Lirico. The program will also feature Beethoven's Cello Sonata No. 5, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 and George Lloyd's Requiem.  WHRO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Keep Norfolk Beautiful and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation will host the 37th Clean The Bay Day on Saturday, May 2, 2026 from 9:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. Volunteers will help remove litter from the Chesapeake Bay watershed at approved locations with supplies provided for each cleanup group.  City of Norfolk

  • Airports saw increased traveler foot traffic on Tuesday as the Thanksgiving holiday travel period began, with TSA screening over 17 million passengers nationwide until December 1. Travelers at Norfolk International noted a calm airport while federal officials assured ample staffing—reminding flyers to check with their airlines for weather-related delays.  WAVY
  • City officials announced that city-owned garages offer two hours of free parking to help local shoppers during the holiday season — including on Small Business Saturday. This program will support Norfolk residents in shopping local as they enjoy the festive season.  City of Norfolk
