COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CBN’s Helping the Home Front has seen a surge in requests for food help after the government shutdown and will deliver 1,400 boxes today at Joint Base Langley-Eustis to 700 military families. The nonprofit is working with extra volunteers and local churches to prepare regular monthly boxes plus special Thanksgiving boxes with gift certificates for a free turkey or ham.  WAVY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A study from Upgraded Points shows that a single adult in Hampton Roads must earn about $107,000 a year to live comfortably—while the median personal income is only around $48,000. Two-parent households need between $179,600 for one child and $263,800 for three to meet the balanced 50/30/20 budget.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Suburban Park Elementary in Norfolk was chosen from over 1,600 K-12 schools to receive a teachers lounge makeover worth over $7,500 from the Virginia Lottery. School leaders plan to begin the renovation in spring 2026—aiming to provide a comfortable space for staff to recharge.  WAVY
  • The Main Street Library will host a lecture by Karen Hudson on oyster farming and its role in supporting Chesapeake Bay’s economy on Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m.—she is a shellfish aquaculture specialist at VIMS. Registration opened on Nov. 18 at 10 a.m.  Hampton Roads Messenger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia’s first Climate Assessment was released yesterday and shows rising temperatures, tides and rain are changing conditions from coastal Tidewater to the mountains. Researchers from George Mason University and other institutions gathered data from over 300 sources to guide decisions on future infrastructure—helping officials understand current hazards.  WHRO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Norfolk Police Department is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to run a Click It or Ticket campaign from November 22 through November 30 to remind drivers and passengers to buckle up during the busy Thanksgiving weekend (which includes Grand Illumination and Harbor Half Marathon weekend).  City of Norfolk
  • Virginia’s project to bring high-speed internet to every home was approved by the NTIA—clearing the way for $545 million in federal awards to 23 service providers. Governor Youngkin said that with nearly $430 million in private support, the plan will connect 133,000 unserved homes over the next four years, with Norfolk set to receive $1,008,479 in BEAD awards—ensuring more residents get connected soon.  WAVY
  • Norfolk city council approved Flock Safety license plate reading cameras to be installed around the forthcoming casino on Tuesday evening—Boyd Gaming requested the solar-powered cameras to monitor parking areas. The cameras capture license plates with software as part of Norfolk’s ongoing safety efforts following over two years of similar installations.  3 WTKR

  • A new contract agreement with Humana ensures Virginia patients keep in-network access to Bon Secours starting Jan. 1. The agreement covers more than 48,000 patients in the Richmond and Hampton Roads markets with Medicare Advantage and Managed Medicaid plans—guaranteeing continued access to trusted care.  WAVY
