- ➤ ODU students and staff collected over 100,000 non-perishable food items from August through October during the Monarchs Give Back campaign — the donations went to Norfolk Public Schools families facing food insecurity. The program will continue to support local families in need. 3 WTKR
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Downtown Norfolk will kick off the holiday season on November 22 as the skyline lights up and the Grand Illumination Parade starts at 7 p.m. Residents can look forward to an evening that launches a series of festive local events. City of Norfolk
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The USDA said November SNAP benefits cannot be issued as planned due to a federal shutdown, and Governor Youngkin has declared a state of emergency to launch Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance. Norfolk officials will work with partners to issue emergency funds weekly starting November 3—eligible households will receive 25% of their usual benefits until the shutdown ends. City of Norfolk
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Norfolk’s new 24/7 mental health crisis center will open November 3 at 839 Poplar Hall Drive—providing crisis triage and a five-night, six-day residential program with 16 beds for Medicaid recipients. WAVY
- ➤ Cases of hand, foot and mouth disease increased compared to last year, with more than 60 outbreak investigations reported in September and a rise in emergency and urgent care visits statewide. Dr. Caitlin Pedati said the virus usually makes children under 5 sick and spreads fast, so people are urged to wash their hands and avoid close contact when sick. WAVY
