Good morning, Norfolk. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 24th of October.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dominion Energy filed new long-range projections that show how it will meet growing power demand and follow the Virginia Clean Economy Act. The filing shows rising monthly rates and a shift toward more solar and battery storage — with additional nuclear options planned as power needs grow.  WHRO

CULTURE NEWS

  • The annual LAVA Halloween Extravaganza returns tomorrow at Toast and Perro Blanco on Colonial Avenue and West 24th, bringing live music, food, drinks, and a costume contest that supports a local charity — with over 1,500 people expected to attend. Local artists will perform cover sets from different decades to highlight Norfolk's music scene.  WHRO
  • The Best of Pickin will feature a classic 2007 Bluegrass release from pioneers Tony Rice and Peter Rowan — joined by Sharon Gilchrist and Bryn Davies and featuring new tracks by Burnett Sisters Band, Jason Carter and Holly Williams. The show airs tonight at 10 on 89.5 WHRV.  WHRO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study found that attorney fees for eviction cases in Virginia increased sharply over the past years—fees have often reached $1,000 per hearing, which makes it harder for tenants already struggling to pay rent and late fees. Housing advocates say the high fees, seen most in Hampton Roads cities, have worsened financial hardship and call for clearer fee breakdowns to protect renters.  WHRO

FINANCE NEWS

  • The IRS has adjusted tax brackets for inflation so that even if incomes rise with prices, Norfolk taxpayers may see little change in their rates — those earning the same may benefit from standard deductions now set at $32,200 for married couples and just over $16,000 for singles.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hampton Roads Transit and Suffolk Transit will offer free rides on November 4 to help voters get to the polls — the service covers all routes including buses, light rail, ferry and paratransit. Transit managers say the free rides aim to remove transportation barriers so that every eligible voter can cast their ballot.  WAVY
  • Hampton Roads Transit will offer free light rail rides Saturday, Oct. 25 to support Norfolk State University's homecoming, including a parade at Park Avenue and Virginia Beach Boulevard at 8 a.m., a 2 p.m. football game against South Carolina State and a post-game concert. Train service begins at 6 a.m. with intervals shortening from 30 minutes to 15 minutes by 9 a.m.—free parking is available at select garages while bus routes detour on Park Avenue, Virginia Beach Boulevard and Corprew Avenue from 7:30—11 a.m. as heavy traffic is expected.  City of Norfolk

HEALTH NEWS

  • The NHTSA and FDA issued safety tips to help Norfolk residents have a safe Halloween by advising trick-or-treaters, pet owners, and party hosts to use a buddy system, wear reflective clothing, inspect treats, and plan for designated drivers. They recommend these measures—designed to reduce risks and prevent accidents—as residents prepare to celebrate later this week.  WAVY
