ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Orionid Meteor Shower peaks with up to 20 meteors per hour visible after midnight—stargazers should head to dark areas outside city lights for the best view. Debris from Halley's Comet creates meteors that will streak across the sky from the Orion region.  13 News Now
  • The Virginia Department of Health said a 600-acre portion of the Nansemond River was restored to safe status, allowing shellfish harvesting to resume Oct.15 (after being condemned for bacterial contamination). Experts said the National Parks and Recreation Association will meet with the VDH to review local data (to ensure ongoing safety measures).  WAVY
  • Virginia DWR warned that suspected H5N1 bird flu cases in wild birds increased since July after reports of dead black vultures, including one case in Hampton Roads. The agency asked locals to report clusters of dead birds and to use protective gear when handling sick or dead birds — a measure to help control the virus.  3 WTKR
  • A new study shows Atlantic menhaden numbers are down 37 percent, which may lead regulators to cut harvest limits soon—experts say this is needed to help the fish recover. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Hampton Roads Sanitation District turned 1 billion gallons of treated wastewater into drinking water using its SWIFT project—an effort that recharges water underground and cuts nutrient pollution. • Experts say seniors in Hampton Roads may face high long-term care costs — with in-home care at about $66,000 a year, assisted living around $72,000, and nursing home care at $114,000 — since Medicare only pays for short-term rehab.
