- ➤ Hundreds of cars lined up at Military Circle Mall on Friday morning as families waited for food amid the ongoing government shutdown— the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore organized an emergency pop-up distribution designed to serve at least 500 households; supplies ran short after the distribution began. 3 WTKR
- ➤ Dozens of local and regional farmers gathered in Norfolk at the Waterside Marriott for the annual Small Farm Outreach Conference hosted by Virginia State University’s Small Farm Outreach Program to learn about USDA programs and build sustainable farms. Fifteen participants earned certification as beginning farmers—adding new strength to the local farming community. 13 News Now

- ➤ Crews in Norfolk responded to a water main break this morning at the intersection of Bolling Avenue and Jamestown Crescent—utility staff went door-to-door to notify residents while they worked with no set time for repairs. WAVY

- ➤ Local musicians will take the stage at The NorVa today for the Timbaland & the Hitmakers Celebration—each act is eager to perform and honor Norfolk's music heritage while inviting the community to support local talent. 3 WTKR
- ➤ Gabriel is a musical about the 1800 rebellion led by enslaved blacksmith Gabriel that is playing in Richmond through early November as part of Virginia 250 commemoration programming. The production team plans to bring the show to Norfolk next year—its original songs and stage design honor this historic story. WHRO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The CODI Alert system—an alternative to AMBER Alerts launched last September—has been used 40 times this year to locate every missing child. Hampton Commonwealth Attorney Anton Bell said the system will continue to alert the public when a child under 17 is reported missing under suspicious circumstances. WAVY
- ➤ Gov. Youngkin has activated the National Guard into state active duty ahead of planned 'No Kings' protests in local areas including Williamsburg, Newport News, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake—he said peaceful assembly is allowed but any property destruction or violence will be met with swift action. No violence or vandalism was reported at the previous protest in June. 3 WTKR
- ➤ The Virginia Fuel Assistance Program is accepting applications until Nov. 14—families can apply to receive help with winter heating bills. City of Norfolk
- ➤ Virginia Beach is honoring Hampton Roads native Timbaland by naming a street and presenting him with the key to the city during Timbaland Way Weekend—events include a parade, block party, and a concert at The NorVa in Norfolk. The celebration runs from October 17 to 19 and is mostly free, though tickets are required for the concert. 13 News Now

- ➤ Health officials reported that a free-roaming brown tabby with rabies was captured on Wellman Street in the Glenrock neighborhood on Oct. 10 after showing aggressive behavior and was euthanized, and anyone exposed should call (757) 683-2712 for guidance. WAVY

Dementia Caregiver Workshop
Join Certified Dementia Caregiver Specialist, Marcia Futterman Brodie of Marcia Trains on Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 9:30 a.m.-noon for the Dementia Caregiver Workshop to be held at Aviva Pembroke, 373 Constitution Ave, Virginia Beach. The workshop is designed to help participants gain a better understanding and practical strategies to support those affected by the changes that occur in the brain. The goal of this workshop, taught by Brodie, who has completed Certified Independent Positive Approach to Care™ training, is to demonstrate to caregivers how individuals with cognitive impairment hear, see, and comprehend, as well as how these same caregivers can provide support.
