- ➤ Lew’s Hot Dogs on Azalea Garden Road in Norfolk will close on Oct. 31 after nearly 60 years of service, and owner William East said a two-week notice was given to loyal customers—many of whom grew up with the tradition—hoping a new operator will continue the legacy. WAVY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, the Norfolk School Board approved a closure and consolidation plan—by a vote of 6-1—to close nine schools by the 2033-34 school year, with initial moves including closing Willoughby Early Childhood Center and shifting pre-K to Oceanair Elementary School while Norview will close in 2026-27. Declining enrollment and financial pressures from a March City Council vote prompted the plan, and a rezoning effort will be finalized by February with a public hearing before March 30. 13 News Now

- ➤ Local nonprofits are hosting the Solar Schools event in Norfolk on Saturday, Oct.18 at Norfolk Academy from 10:30 a.m. to noon to show how a solar installation saved nearly $80K each year and how schools can use similar projects to save money before federal tax credits expire — encouraging more districts to adopt solar energy. - ➤ Income-eligible households may apply for the Virginia Fuel Assistance Program until Nov. 14 to help cover heating costs—this includes connection fees, installation charges and furnace restarts. Join Certified Dementia Caregiver Specialist, Marcia Futterman Brodie of Marcia Trains on Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 9:30 a.m.-noon for the Dementia Caregiver Workshop to be held at Aviva Pembroke, 373 Constitution Ave, Virginia Beach. The workshop is designed to help participants gain a better understanding and practical strategies to support those affected by the changes that occur in the brain. The goal of this workshop, taught by Brodie, who has completed Certified Independent Positive Approach to Care™ training, is to demonstrate to caregivers how individuals with cognitive impairment hear, see, and comprehend, as well as how these same caregivers can provide support.
