COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore will host a Shutdown Relief Mobile Distribution Friday, October 17 at Military Circle Mall—880 N. Military Hwy, Norfolk—from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to serve 500 households facing missed paychecks during the government shutdown. Guests must arrive with empty trunks and remain in their vehicles until they are signaled to pick up food.  City of Norfolk

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Smartmouth Brewing announced it will close its Norfolk Chelsea location—after 13 years—and focus operations on its Pilot House in Virginia Beach at the end of 2025. The brewery said final celebrations include a 13th Birthday Bash on Oct. 11, Dark Arts on Nov. 28, and Krampusnacht on Dec. 12.  13 News Now

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Chrysler Museum of Art will open the exhibition 'Susan Watkins and Women Artists of the Progressive Era' on Oct. 17, which shows the work of the early 20th-century artist and her peers. Curator Corey Piper said the show aims to restore Watkins' place in American art—helping more women artists gain recognition.  WHRO
  • Today, WHRO-FM airs 'A Local Touch—Music with a Virginia Connection' at 9:00 p.m. where host Raymond Jones talks with Dr. Kathleen Decker about the Veterans Poetry Workshop and the power of music and poetry; he also shares details on an upcoming Williamsburg Symphony concert set for October 21.  WHRO

  • Volunteers with Norfolk-based Wetlands Watch measured floodwaters that reached about 4.4 feet on Friday and Saturday and 6.18 feet on Sunday during a coastal storm and King Tide event—figures that experts warn will be common by 2050 and 2070.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New SNAP rules set to take effect in November will require adults under 65 to work 80 hours monthly, be in school, or enroll in training, which may cause many to lose benefits. The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank is stocking up on food + preparing to aid local residents as food insecurity grows.  WAVY
  • Truth Tracker is examining attack ads that aired after the debate at Norfolk State University between gubernatorial candidates Abigail Spanberger and Winsome Earle-Sears — one ad aired at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and highlighted Spanberger’s refusal to answer a direct question. Political analyst Dr. Jesse Richman said the ads misused her call to let your rage fuel you and warned they could sway opinions before Election day on Nov. 4.  WAVY
  • Columbia Gas of Virginia urged customers to apply for LIHEAP help with heating costs before the Nov 14 deadline—eligible households can use the program for cash grants or emergency heating repairs. The federally funded program opened on Oct 14 and targets income-eligible households to help cover rising energy bills.  13 News Now
  • Today, Verizon is offering flexible payment arrangements and deferrals to federal employees, military members, Coast Guard and first responders affected by the government shutdown — customers must call 1-800-VERIZON to verify their status.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia Beach ambulance crews now carry Colt Kits—sensory kits with noise-cancelling headphones, sunglasses, toys, and communication tools—to help calm patients with autism and sensory disorders during emergencies. Bailey Hartley, a career paramedic who developed the kits after learning of his son's needs, said they are now on every ambulance in the city.  WHRO

    Join Certified Dementia Caregiver Specialist, Marcia Futterman Brodie of Marcia Trains on Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 9:30 a.m.-noon for the Dementia Caregiver Workshop to be held at Aviva Pembroke, 373 Constitution Ave, Virginia Beach. The workshop is designed to help participants gain a better understanding and practical strategies to support those affected by the changes that occur in the brain. The goal of this workshop, taught by Brodie, who has completed Certified Independent Positive Approach to Care™ training, is to demonstrate to caregivers how individuals with cognitive impairment hear, see, and comprehend, as well as how these same caregivers can provide support.
