COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Norfolk firefighter helped a new mother who had an early delivery get a car seat when she learned she could not leave the hospital without one. Firefighter Anthony Canard guided the mother to a local store and gave her $60 to buy the seat—bringing relief to the family.  WAVY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After this weekend's severe weather, AAA officials warned drivers in Norfolk to avoid floodwater—stating that as little as 12 inches can cause a car to stall and pick up hidden debris that may lead to costly repairs. They added that rescue and towing may be delayed until conditions are safer.  13 News Now

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Smartmouth Brewing is closing its Norfolk location at 1309 Raleigh Ave after 13 years—its door will shut in late December as it shifts focus to the Pilot House in Virginia Beach where it will continue to brew beer, bake pizza and host events. Founder Porter Hardy thanked loyal customers for their support over the years.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 10th Annual NEON Festival will be held in Downtown Norfolk's NEON District on October 16 and October 17 from 6 to 10 pm, featuring local artists, live music, and art unveilings — the free event is presented by Arts Alliance and PRA Group. The festival will showcase ten new public art projects created over a decade and offer a range of community programs.  Hampton Roads Messenger

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents combed Buckroe Beach in Hampton Monday after a weekend storm flooded the area, collecting shells and coins—some using metal detectors for exercise. City officials will assess the beach later this week with a drone to compare current conditions with those from the summer.  3 WTKR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hampton Roads Transit added two new evening light rail trips on Sundays at Harbor Park Station—designed to sync with Amtrak’s 8:35 p.m. train, and it also introduced morning trips in both directions Monday through Saturday to connect with the 6:14 a.m. Northeast Regional departure.  13 News Now
  • Rep. Jen Kiggans visited the F-35 fighter jet in Virginia Beach on Monday with Lockheed Martin and local leaders to check its stealth features and virtual flight demo – the jet program gives Virginia more than $251 million each year and supports over 2,000 jobs.  13 News Now
  • Norfolk State University hosted the historic Virginia Gubernatorial Debate at its L. Douglas Wilder Center— the only such event in the Commonwealth. In partnership with WAVY TV 10 and Nexstar Media Group, the debate featured former Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger and Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, who dueled over becoming the state's first female governor.  Hampton Roads Messenger

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Health updated its vaccine schedule today based on new CDC recommendations—children under 4 will now get separate MMR and chickenpox shots instead of a combined MMRV—and changed access to the COVID-19 vaccine so that people 3 and older can get vaccinated at pharmacies without a prescription. The update follows past confusion over vaccine access and aligns with the latest guidelines.  13 News Now

  • Dementia Caregiver Workshop

    Join Certified Dementia Caregiver Specialist, Marcia Futterman Brodie of Marcia Trains on Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 9:30 a.m.-noon for the Dementia Caregiver Workshop to be held at Aviva Pembroke, 373 Constitution Ave, Virginia Beach. The workshop is designed to help participants gain a better understanding and practical strategies to support those affected by the changes that occur in the brain. The goal of this workshop, taught by Brodie, who has completed Certified Independent Positive Approach to Care™ training, is to demonstrate to caregivers how individuals with cognitive impairment hear, see, and comprehend, as well as how these same caregivers can provide support.
