- ➤ A large house fire on Tuesday morning in Olde Towne Portsmouth left one person dead and another hospitalized with burns—neighbors rallied around the surviving sister as St. John’s Episcopal Church collected donations while officials investigated the cause. 13 News Now

- ➤ Virginia Furniture Company, a Norfolk landmark in the Neon District, will close on December 31 after 86 years of service — family owners David and Jeff Laibstain plan to retire while the historic store is on sale. 3 WTKR

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Virginia governor candidates Winsome Earle-Sears and Abigail Spanberger will debate today at 7 p.m. at Norfolk State University—polls show Spanberger leads by 10 points and both campaigns are clashing over campaign funds and issues like education, immigration and public safety with Election Day approaching. 3 WTKR
- ➤ Norfolk International Airport is launching a therapy dog program today — three trained dogs and their certified handlers will greet guests to ease travel nerves. The program is part of broader improvements at the airport that include new gates, refreshed stores and a modernized checkpoint. WAVY
- ➤ U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth launched a barracks task force to fix military housing that has had poor conditions for decades, and he said a strategy will be ready in 30 days—lawmakers in Hampton Roads welcomed the move to provide safe and clean homes for servicemembers. 13 News Now
- ➤ Campaign finance reports show that $23 million out of nearly $60 million raised by the gubernatorial candidates came from donors outside Virginia. Abigail Spanberger got over half of her $41 million and Winsome Earle-Sears raised 39% of her nearly $17 million from outside donors—Earle-Sears also received a $500,000 check after a racist canvas sign appeared. - ➤ Cases of syphilis spiked among pregnant women in Virginia with a 4% increase over 2023 and 76% more than in 2020—congenital syphilis reached its highest level in 30 years. Dementia Caregiver Workshop
Join Certified Dementia Caregiver Specialist, Marcia Futterman Brodie of Marcia Trains on Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 9:30 a.m.-noon for the Dementia Caregiver Workshop to be held at Aviva Pembroke, 373 Constitution Ave, Virginia Beach. The workshop is designed to help participants gain a better understanding and practical strategies to support those affected by the changes that occur in the brain. The goal of this workshop, taught by Brodie, who has completed Certified Independent Positive Approach to Care™ training, is to demonstrate to caregivers how individuals with cognitive impairment hear, see, and comprehend, as well as how these same caregivers can provide support.
