  • A survivor of childhood trauma who once lived in a shelter with her daughters now serves as the first former client on the HER Shelter board to help those facing domestic violence and homelessness in the community—she said her experience led her to use the support she received to guide others. The HER 40th gala will take place on Oct. 18 on the Spirit of Norfolk to raise funds for its programs.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The lineup for the 22nd annual Patriotic Festival in Norfolk was announced Tuesday, and the event will take place at Norfolk Scope Arena from May 22 to 24, 2026. Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct 10 at 10 a.m.—the performers include Zach Top, Mackenzie Carpenter, Brooks & Dunn, Lanie Gardner, The Red Clay Strays, and The Castellows.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, during National Pedestrian Safety Month, the Norfolk Police Department and NHTSA urge drivers to slow down in busy areas—after 26 crashes with pedestrian injuries occurred since January and statistics show a pedestrian is injured every eight minutes nationwide.  City of Norfolk
  • State lawmakers hosted an event at Christopher Newport University to encourage young voters to register ahead of the November gubernatorial election. Lawmakers and candidates, including state Sen. Danny Diggs and Lt. Gov. nominee John Reid, engaged with attendees—roughly a dozen of whom registered by noon—and discussed key issues like the cost of living.  13 News Now
  • More than 60 recruits began their military careers Tuesday at NAS Oceana where Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth led the oath ceremony + visited the gathering. He also announced a new barracks task force that will develop a department-wide investment plan within 30 days using over a billion dollars as the down payment.  3 WTKR
  • Hampton Roads Transit announced it will add Tide light rail stops to better connect with Amtrak services starting Sunday, October 12th. Two extra evening trips will serve the westbound Harbor Park Station for passengers arriving around 8:35 p.m.—while additional morning trips will operate Monday through Saturday for connecting with the 6:14 a.m. Northeast Regional departure.  WAVY
  • The Norfolk Community Services Board is holding fall hiring events on October 16 and 18 for mental health and nursing professionals. Applicants must apply in advance for an on-the-spot interview + contingent job offer for selected positions.  City of Norfolk
  • Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and four other state AGs filed a suit last week against Zillow and Redfin in a federal complaint in the Eastern District of Virginia—alleging that a $100 million deal limited competition in the rental market and broke the Sherman Antitrust Act.  13 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sentara Health Plans announced it will stop offering Medicare Advantage, Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug, Health Maintenance Organization and Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans in Virginia, North Carolina and Florida at the end of December 31 due to financial concerns. Affected members will get notification letters this week and must choose a new plan during Medicare open enrollment next week while hospital and doctor services remain unchanged.  3 WTKR
  • Sentara Health will host a drive-thru flu shot event on October 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at 17 locations in Virginia and North Carolina—offering vaccines for everyone six months and older. The event will serve people on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.  WAVY

  • Dementia Caregiver Workshop

    Join Certified Dementia Caregiver Specialist, Marcia Futterman Brodie of Marcia Trains on Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 9:30 a.m.-noon for the Dementia Caregiver Workshop to be held at Aviva Pembroke, 373 Constitution Ave, Virginia Beach. The workshop is designed to help participants gain a better understanding and practical strategies to support those affected by the changes that occur in the brain. The goal of this workshop, taught by Brodie, who has completed Certified Independent Positive Approach to Care™ training, is to demonstrate to caregivers how individuals with cognitive impairment hear, see, and comprehend, as well as how these same caregivers can provide support.
