  • Monday night, dozens gathered at Slover Library in downtown Norfolk for a candlelight vigil to honor domestic violence victims and survivors—local nonprofits offered resources while advocates urged community support and change.  3 WTKR
  • 11-year-old Guillermo 'Big G' Cuellar III built Lego sets to cope with treatment at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters and, after he and Patrick Myers donated $6,000 of sets to other young patients, Lego gifted him free Legoland tickets—his family now seeks help with travel and hotel costs to make the trip happen.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Virginia Zoo will host three Halloween events this month: ZooBoo for families on October 18-19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Adult Night: ZooBoo Edition on October 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Howl-o-ween: Dog Day on October 30 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Advanced tickets and registration deadlines apply while safety rules require that dogs at the dog day event are well-trained and vaccinated.  City of Norfolk
  • Norfolk’s historic Attucks Theatre is opening a new gallery with the inaugural exhibition Black Voices & Visions on Oct. 10 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.—the free event will showcase about 50 works by Black artists from Hampton Roads and run through April 3.  City of Norfolk

  • At Oceanair Elementary last Friday, a substitute teacher let a 5-year-old leave through a side door early, and the child walked home alone after crossing Chesapeake Boulevard. This morning, school leaders met with the mother and said they would fix security issues— the teacher is now barred from teaching.  WAVY

  • Dementia Caregiver Workshop

    Join Certified Dementia Caregiver Specialist, Marcia Futterman Brodie of Marcia Trains on Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 9:30 a.m.-noon for the Dementia Caregiver Workshop to be held at Aviva Pembroke, 373 Constitution Ave, Virginia Beach. The workshop is designed to help participants gain a better understanding and practical strategies to support those affected by the changes that occur in the brain. The goal of this workshop, taught by Brodie, who has completed Certified Independent Positive Approach to Care™ training, is to demonstrate to caregivers how individuals with cognitive impairment hear, see, and comprehend, as well as how these same caregivers can provide support.
