COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Large crowds are expected in downtown Norfolk today with the 35th annual Children’s Festival and the return of a Carnival cruise as organizers finish set-up and prepare over 100 activities (with a nice weather forecast and city security set to manage foot traffic).  WAVY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Breeze Airways launched a new non-stop flight from Norfolk to Orlando on Oct. 3 with one-way fares starting at $64 — the service will run on Mondays and Fridays.  WAVY
  • Serve the City is hosting a forum for local restaurant owners, caterers, and food truck operators — and other food service professionals — to learn how the city procures food services and explore contract opportunities. Speakers from Hampton and Peninsula Health Districts, Newport News Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue, Newport News Fire Department, and Department of Parks and Recreation will offer insights into business resources and support.  Hampton Roads Messenger

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fall Town Point Virginia Wine Festival will return to Town Point Park on Norfolk’s downtown waterfront from October 18—19, featuring over 200 Virginia wines, live music, gourmet food, and local artisan vendors. The festival will run daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with wine sampling ending at 4:30 p.m. and wine sales at 5 p.m.  13 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Norfolk Police and Virginia State Police visited Norview High School on Friday to warn students about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving. The event featured a driving simulator and drunk goggles to show how quickly distractions can turn deadly — Virginia law imposes stiff penalties for offenders.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Youngkin announced today that Colonna’s Shipyard is investing $79 million to add its fourth drydock on Norfolk’s working waterfront—this facility will lift up to 25,000 tons and is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2028.  Hampton Roads Messenger
  • Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares filed an antitrust lawsuit today in Alexandria against Zillow and Redfin and other state attorneys general—alleging that Zillow's $100 million payment to have Redfin exit the multifamily rental listings market violates federal law and harms Virginia renters while the suit seeks measures to restore competition.  Hampton Roads Messenger
