- ➤ Norfolk will break ground for a new 100,000 square foot fitness and wellness center at 11 a.m. on Oct. 10 at 7300 Newport Ave — featuring a natatorium, gym, full library, locker and meeting rooms. The project, costing $68 million, replaced the old facility demolished in spring and will open in Fall 2027. City of Norfolk
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Winterfest on the Wisconsin is returning to Norfolk this November and will run from Nov. 14 to Dec. 31 with an expanded 30,000-square-foot Kingdom of the Snow Queen indoor journey featuring talking polar bears, life-sized nutcrackers, an owl and the Snow Queen—adding a half-mile walking light trail from the Pagoda through Town Point Park along the Elizabeth River; Nauticus will offer tickets on Oct. 13 for members and on Oct. 20 for the general public. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Norfolk State University junior Edward Seawood saved alumnus Reginald Osby’s life—by calling 911 and performing chest compressions when Osby collapsed on campus. Five days later, Osby’s wife presented a $10,000 gift toward Seawood’s tuition while the university said it will soon offer CPR training programs. WAVY
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Norfolk will host the Norfolk Arbor Day Festival on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lafayette Park (3500 Granby Street), where visitors will learn proper planting techniques, shop for trees and plants, and receive a free giveaway from local experts. WAVY
- ➤ City officials said the new berm project at Sylvan Street and Walnut Hill Street in the Larchmont-Edgewater neighborhood is reducing tidal flooding and has already stopped two major inundations with final grading scheduled in the next few weeks. The project is part of a larger plan to boost flood defenses in Norfolk—officials note regular maintenance will help the berm work even when clogged tide valves allow some water build-up. 3 WTKR

- ➤ The City of Norfolk and MEB will break ground on a new 100,000-square-foot fitness and wellness center at 7300 Newport Avenue on Friday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m.—with remarks from Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander, MEB Executive Vice President Mark Olmstead, and Clark Nexsen Chief Operating Officer Chad Poultney.
