COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Coastal Recovery Virginia, a nonprofit from Virginia Beach, has helped families in western North Carolina a year after Hurricane Helene by making several trips and donating an RV. The group will send volunteers to Swannanoa this October using a new van purchased with donor support—Todd Woolston said long-term relief is still needed.  3 WTKR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After nearly 24 years, Norfolk International Airport will see a nonstop flight to Cancun as Breeze Airways launches its seasonal route—travelers can book flights now and the service will begin January 10 pending final government approvals—providing locals a direct international option.  WAVY
  • Mara Willis had solar panels installed in 2022 to lower her rising Dominion Energy bills but her system went offline when Titan Solar shut down, leaving her with a $32,000 loan and inoperable equipment. I Love Solar Virginia restored the panels so they now produce power—though Willis must continue paying $80 each month until the loan is paid off.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Finished sand sculptures from 32 professionals from 12 countries are on display today along the Oceanfront as part of the Neptune Festival Boardwalk Weekend. The works were carved during the Sept. 22—25 sand sculpting competition and are set in a nearly football field—long area with accessible walkways and lighting for visitors.  13 News Now

  • Gas prices continue to drop as fall begins with the average national price at $3.15 per gallon while Hampton Roads stays at $2.98—down 15 cents from a month ago.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A former Norfolk Public Schools teacher, Sarah Harrington, opened the Solstice Hybrid Academy in Highland Park a year ago and grew its enrollment from four to 20 by using a mix of Montessori, Waldorf, computer-based, and project-based lessons. The academy rides on a 'skoolie' inspired by the Magic School Bus—connecting classroom learning to field trips and self-directed activities every day.  13 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal lawsuit was settled over disability discrimination after an employee with a heart condition was denied proper work accommodations at Virginia International Terminals in Norfolk—VIT will pay $20,000 and update policies to comply with the ADA, as directed by the EEOC.  WAVY
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin announced $2.8 million in GOVirginia grants to support 10 projects that boost regional economies, expand workforce training, and foster innovation in advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity. The awards also leverage an extra $1.2 million in local funding and include a project in the Norfolk area to introduce collaborative robotic welding technology + enhance local manufacturing skills.  Hampton Roads Messenger

  • Life’s Journey opened its new Crisis Receiving Center at 1003 Norfolk Square in Norfolk during Suicide Awareness Month—providing 24/7 mental health support and partnering with hospitals, jails, and community agencies to assist those in crisis.  WAVY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A report from Virginia Realtors said home sales stayed steady with a median price of $430,000 and a total sold value of $5.1 billion while active inventory held at around 24,000 listings and an added 13,000 online. Ryan Price, chief economist for the Virginia Association of Realtors, said Hampton Roads—one of the larger markets with about 2,300 sales—remains a desirable area and he expects the market to stay steady for the rest of the year.  WAVY
