COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction will begin this week on new bike lanes on Granby Street from Willow Wood Drive to Admiral Taussig Boulevard in Wards Corner to help cyclists and pedestrians. The project removes one traffic lane in each direction and adds rapid flashing beacons at five intersections—steps that will boost safety in Norfolk.  3 WTKR

CRIME NEWS

  • Norfolk Police charged 28-year-old Benjamin Sell with hit-and-run after finding a car in water at Haven Creek Boat Ramp late Saturday night where a 60-year-old man was found dead— the investigation is ongoing.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • A free event to mark 75 years since the Incheon Landings will be held at the MacArthur Memorial on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2:45 p.m. Former UNC Commanders Scaparrotti, Brooks and LaCamera will lead a talk on the battle’s strategies—registration is required.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local environmental groups say that proposed changes to the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement ignore key issues like climate change and the loss of tidal wetlands—critics worry that the new plan will lower pollution and protection targets. The Chesapeake Bay Program will share the draft next month and officials will vote on a final version in December.  WHRO

  • Norfolk woman Melissa Riddick faced an unexpected water bill for a property she left in August 2021 when a leak led to over $12,000 in charges; after calling Norfolk Public Utilities, she received a revised bill of $1,500 & now warns others to check their bills and confirm service termination.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia health officials said that a prescription is now required for the updated COVID shot during a temporary change—meant to address the gap as the stratus variant surges. The CDC Advisory Committee will vote Sept. 18—19 on returning to regular walk-in appointments once the updated vaccine meets CDC guidelines.  WAVY
