CRIME NEWS

  • Portsmouth police responded to a shooting on Sept. 6 at about 1:05 a.m. at the intersection of Dahlia and Manly Streets—one victim died as three others were injured while investigators searched for a silver or gray 2025 Kia K4 sedan with a damaged front passenger door.  3 WTKR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Powerball ticket sales during 42 drawings raised $29.6M for K-12 schools ahead of a $1.787B jackpot, with Saturday’s drawing awarding prizes to over 266,000 tickets—including five $100,000 wins. Although no jackpot-winning tickets were sold in Virginia, the proceeds benefit local education.  13 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Norfolk begins building a bike lane on Granby Street between Willow Wood Drive and Admiral Taussig Boulevard with a drop in the speed limit to 30 mph and new pedestrian safety beacons installed at key crossings—Dumont, Elvin, Fife, Oxford, and Talbot Hall Roads. City officials expect the work to last about 10 months and say the project will improve safety for all road users.  13 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute will host its 4th Annual Prostate Cancer & Men’s Health Awareness Fair on Saturday, September 27 (9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) at its campus in Hampton, offering PSA tests, digital rectal exams and health education to help men learn about early detection.  Hampton Roads Messenger
  • Doctors say that during Blood Cancer Awareness Month, symptoms like fever, fatigue, and night sweats can seem like the flu, so anyone noticing these signs should contact their doctor. Dr. Julia Sheets from Riverside Cancer Specialists explained that early detection improves treatment—she also urged people to donate blood as needed.  13 News Now

  • On September 7, MEAC football games saw Norfolk State rally for a 34-31 overtime win over Virginia State at William Dick Price Stadium while Temple defeated Howard 55-7, Delaware State edged Albany 37-32, Old Dominion beat N.C. Central 54-6, Towson overcame Morgan State 27-22, and No. 10 South Carolina beat S.C. State 38-10—head coach Michael Vick earned his first win in the overtime contest—.  Hampton Roads Messenger
  • Virginia Tech jumped out to a 10—0 lead but collapsed, falling 44—20 to Vanderbilt on Saturday night at Lane Stadium—dropping the Hokies to an 0—2 record. They will host Old Dominion on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. on ACC Network.  13 News Now
  • The Norfolk State Spartans secured their first win of the season by coming from behind to beat Virginia State 34 to 31 in overtime today. Coach Michael Vick changed the game by bringing in Otto Kuhns, who threw two crucial touchdown passes — one to JJ Evans and one to Dresean Kendrick, with kicker Evan Helfrich nailing a 29 yard field goal in overtime.  13 News Now
