COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Norfolk community is mourning Dr. James Carraway, a well-known plastic surgeon and Air Force veteran who passed away at 87 after a 60-year career at Norfolk General Hospital. He trained many doctors and worked with Operation Smile—offering his expertise to those in need.  3 WTKR
  • Norfolk Sheriff’s Office will host its annual Senior Fest on September 24 at Chartway Arena from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., offering Norfolk residents aged 55 and up a free catered lunch, guest speakers, door prizes and entertainment—attendees may also receive free flu shots and health screenings if they bring their health insurance cards.  WAVY
  • On Saturday, HRT is providing free rides on The Tide light rail to help fans get to Norfolk State University football at 6 p.m. and Norfolk Tides baseball at 6:35 p.m.—the service begins two hours before the games with trains every 15 minutes and will run until midnight to ease parking issues.  13 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday, a shooting on Baker Rd. in Virginia Beach injured one person who was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries—VBPD detectives are now investigating the incident.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Grammy-nominated British vocal ensemble VOCES8 will perform holiday concerts as part of the Virginia Arts Festival in Norfolk, Williamsburg and Richmond this December. The shows will be held at historic churches—Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church on December 16 in Norfolk, St. Bede Catholic Church on December 17 in Williamsburg, and River Road Church Baptist on December 18 in Richmond.  WHRO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Harbor Hope Center opened on September 2 in Chesapeake as a free recovery school for high school students battling substance abuse. It serves students from Chesapeake — Norfolk — Virginia Beach — Portsmouth — and Suffolk and partners with Chesapeake Integrated Behavioral Healthcare for daily group and individual therapy sessions.  3 WTKR
  • Virginia parents can find licensed childcare by using state websites like the Virginia Department of Social Services and ChildCareVA, where searches by city and ZIP code reveal details such as operating hours, violations, and capacity—additional options include independent marketplaces and local YMCA programs coupled with word-of-mouth recommendations.  3 WTKR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Norfolk sailors and Marines from the USS Iwo Jima have been drilling with the National Guard in southern Puerto Rico since Labor Day weekend as part of counter-narcotics work aimed at drug cartels—other Norfolk-based ships, including the USS Gravely and USS Newport News, are operating near Venezuela. The White House said a military strike killed 11 people to send a message.  WHRO
  • On Sept. 2, Secretary of the Navy John Phelan said in a letter that the Navy followed U.S. law in handling sailor Angelina Resendiz, who was last seen at Naval Station Norfolk on May 29 and found dead in Broad Creek on June 9. Resendiz’s mother and Sen. Warner said the family must get answers as NCIS continues its investigation with one sailor in pretrial detention—further review is underway.  13 News Now
