COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Norfolk PD’s annual Trunk or Treat event will take place at Norfolk Scope on Sunday, Oct. 26 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Local and federal public safety agencies will display trucks + the event will offer plenty of candy and encourage costumes for safe Halloween fun.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historian Nathaniel Philbrick will speak as the inaugural speaker for the Sail250 Virginia Speaker Series at The Slover on Oct. 21 at 7 p.m.—he is known for his book In the Heart of the Sea, which was later made into a film by Ron Howard.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Wednesday night’s meeting, Norfolk school leaders reviewed four draft plans to close and consolidate schools with one option keeping Ghent open while the others call for shutting ten facilities and adjusting timelines for student moves as Maury High School prepares for rebuild. The board postponed a vote and plans a special meeting next week to address concerns—such as enrollment mismatches—while refining the transition process.  3 WTKR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia wine producers faced rising challenges as warmer winters allowed leafhoppers to spread Xylella fastidiosa, which led to Pierce’s Disease that damaged 70% of Summerwind Vineyard’s vines in Smithfield. Growers will plant new disease-resistant grape varieties— a costly process that may delay harvests as outbreaks extend to areas like the Shenandoah Valley.  13 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After years of planning, Norfolk will begin construction on bike lanes along Granby St starting Sept. 8 from Willow Wood Dr to Admiral Taussig Blvd. The project will lower the speed limit to 30 mph and add pedestrian safety beacons at intersections—Dumont, Elvin, Fife, Oxford and Talbot Hall.  WAVY
  • The Navy plans to let a private contractor run 14 barracks and build a new facility at key bases in Hampton Roads if Congress approves the $380 million Pentagon budget, aiming to improve living conditions for junior sailors. Critics worry that the move may repeat issues seen in past family housing—raising concerns about long-term upkeep.  WHRO

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Health reported a measles case in Hampton Roads in a child aged 5 to 12. The child visited exposure sites in Norfolk and Virginia Beach from August 27 to September 1 — marking the state's fourth measles case reported this year.  3 WTKR
  • A Virginia Beach school reported a measles case on Aug. 26 when classes resumed, and the health department confirmed the fourth measles case of 2025 in a traveler from the Eastern Region. The school is open today but unvaccinated students and staff must stay home until Sept. 16 (to ensure safety).  WAVY
