ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • AAA advises local motorists to drive carefully and avoid distractions on Labor Day weekend in Virginia Beach Oceanfront after a fatal motorcycle crash began on Laskin Road and ended on Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk, where the rider exceeded 140 mph and hit a concrete wall+officials stress planning a sober ride if drinking.  WAVY
  • A crash on S. George Washington Highway near Dismal Swamp Canal Trail on Saturday morning around 7:27 a.m. left one driver dead and another with non life-threatening injuries—Chesapeake police said the injured driver was taken to a hospital and that the incident is under investigation.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Norfolk Public Schools lost their safe-zone protection from immigration enforcement when a federal memo was revoked, officials said—Interim Superintendent Dr. James Pol sent a letter urging families to get parental permission for accessing student records and noting that ICE’s growing presence in Hampton Roads may impact other districts in the future.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia State Police reported 474 vehicular fatalities in 2025, which is lower than last year’s 555 deaths. They expect safer roads for Labor Day weekend—though they urge drivers to remain cautious as they join a national Crash Awareness Reduction Effort program.  WAVY
  • At an August 13 session, Hampton City Council heard new Fort Monroe Authority Director Scott Martin present a landscape action plan that aims to bring more visitors to Fort Monroe and create new businesses—three developer finalists will be chosen by October with a draft plan ready by July 2026.  3 WTKR
