COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The North Carolina Department of Agriculture suspended the SPCA of Northeastern NC’s shelter on Monday for serious animal welfare violations in Elizabeth City—forcing it to stop accepting new animals until those in care are transferred. Norfolk SPCA is mobilizing a rescue mission to rehome displaced animals and is asking the community for donations.  13 News Now
  • The nets from the old Lambert’s Point Golf Course are coming down as the space is being reshaped into a public open area with limited amenities. Nonprofit leader Brian Neil Friedman wants water fountains, an art walk, and pollinator gardens—city officials say further upgrades will wait until the water treatment project is complete.  3 WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Norfolk's Nauticus, Virginia Zoo and Botanical Garden are starting a membership swap in September that lets members visit the other two for free—advance reservations are required because only a limited number of tickets are available each day. The program also offers prizes, encouraging residents to explore these treasures.  3 WTKR
  • WHRO-FM will air Jules Massenet’s opera Werther this Saturday at 1 p.m. from the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, featuring tenor Benjamin Bernheim and a cast that brings Goethe’s tragic love story to life — a stirring performance of classic art.  WHRO
  • Arts for Learning Virginia is launching interactive workshops to explore Langston Hughes’s influence on literature, culture, and social justice at various library branches—culminating with a final performance at Attucks Theatre. The sessions will run on set dates in September, October, and November— the performance scheduled for November 13 at 7:30 p.m.  City of Norfolk

  • Sandbridge residents are watching Hurricane Erin as it is expected to pass offshore and bring high tides tonight—emergency crews say people should secure loose items. Many visitors are changing plans like rescheduling cruises because the storm may cause heavy rain and strong waves.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander was named Director of Norfolk Festevents’ Board and Vice Chairman of the Sail250 Virginia Executive Board effective immediately after Jerrauld Jones’s passing—she brings her extensive experience as a historian and civic leader to guide the international maritime event planned for June 2026.  City of Norfolk
  • Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger and Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears have agreed to take part in a debate hosted at Norfolk State University on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.—Both had turned down earlier debates, and Spanberger said she is ready to discuss issues that affect Virginia while Earle-Sears finishes her participation forms.  WAVY
