- ➤ Virginia Zoo in Norfolk has named Chris Jenkins as its new Executive Director—he will begin his role in late September after serving as COO at Natural Encounters, Inc. His previous roles at Disney and SeaWorld show his strong background in animal care and training. WAVY
- ➤ Norfolk-based PETA named Tracy Reiman its new president as she takes over for founder Ingrid Newkirk and will work to recruit younger supporters and lead fresh campaigns to end animal exploitation. Reiman, a longtime activist, said she plans to promote sustainable alternatives such as replacing wool in fashion & advancing cruelty-free practices. WHRO

- ➤ A Breeze Airways flight that departed from Norfolk International Airport was diverted to Grand Junction Regional Airport Wednesday morning after a passenger reportedly assaulted others—breaking free of restraints while waving an object—and forced police, fire, and the FBI to respond—delaying its planned 1:20 p.m. departure. - ➤ A Norfolk-based Breeze Airways flight from Norfolk to Los Angeles diverted to Grand Junction after a disruptive passenger started a fight on board—law enforcement restrained the passenger and one flight attendant and one guest received minor injuries. 3 WTKR

- ➤ The MacArthur Memorial will open a new exhibit on the U.S. occupation of Japan on Aug. 23 with a free lecture at 9 a.m.—military historians will discuss topics including the atomic bomb decision, late-war battles and Japan’s surrender. The 5000 square foot exhibit will run through 2027 and offers free admission. 13 News Now

- ➤ Tropical Storm Erin will soon become a hurricane and meteorologist Hunter Forst said the name has been used for seven storms over the years. In 2001, one storm reached Category 3 with 120 mph winds — a detail that makes its timing during a very sad day near New York stand out. 13 News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Small city trucks have been seen cleaning up Ocean View Beach by removing items left on the sand—this caused confusion when one truck removed a neighbor’s chairs. The Public Works Department said workers remove unsafe beach furniture—like lawn chairs—to keep the area safe and urged visitors to use designated containers for unwanted items. WAVY
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Chesapeake Mosquito Control Commission said heavy rain in parts of Chesapeake created extra pools that let more mosquitoes breed, and its crews are using integrated pest management — from treating water to spraying at night — to keep numbers low and prevent diseases like West Nile virus. Homeowners are urged to remove standing water and use safe bug spray as mosquito surveillance continues through October. 13 News Now
