COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Red Cross is hosting the 27th annual Mayor’s Cup Blood Drive until Aug. 30—aiming to help Norfolk secure the trophy and maintain a steady blood supply during summer. The drive urges community members to donate as vacation schedules and summer plans usually lower donations.  City of Norfolk

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mack’s Barge on North Colley closed this summer and its new owner Andrey Tsokanoff of Fish Bones plans to rebrand the spot as a seafood restaurant pending the conditional use permit hearing on Aug. 28—Tsokanoff said he will follow local ordinances to limit late-night outdoor dining and noise.  WAVY
  • Virginia Pint Day will be held on Thursday to help local taprooms recover from lower post-pandemic traffic. Craft Beer Professionals launched the event—featuring a contest-winning glass design by artist Tianna DaCosta available at over 60 breweries—to encourage visitors to return.  WHRO
  • Land ‘N’ Sea Distributing is investing $1.1M to expand to a larger facility in Norfolk at 3321 East Princess Anne Road—this new 120,000-square-foot site will add nearly 30 jobs and introduce close to 5,000 new products to improve operations.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, Aug. 23, the MacArthur Memorial will open a new 5,000 square foot exhibit titled “No Turning Back: MacArthur and the Occupation of Japan, 1945—1951” that will be free until 2027; it will also host a free half-day lecture series on the final weeks of World War II in the Pacific with military experts, with doors opening at 9 a.m.  City of Norfolk
  • The Ghent Rooftop Bar will host a two-day Boozy Bookfair on Thursday and Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. where live music, local bookshops, free entry and kid-friendly options bring book lovers together on the cozy rooftop.  WHRO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • More than 514,133 passengers flew through Norfolk International Airport in July, setting a new monthly record with a 4.8% increase from last July. The record comes as the airport continues its nearly $1 billion expansion project—adding new gates, a customs facility, and terminal upgrades—with plans for its busiest summer yet.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin signed Executive Order 52 to boost nursing home oversight — his order calls for recruiting inspectors, establishing a second licensing office in Northern Virginia, forming an advisory board to propose improvements, and automating inspections with a new transparency portal — and the changes will improve resident care statewide.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rylie Winston, a 19-year-old intern from James Madison University, has improved patient care at Sentara Leigh by introducing room flyers and a monthly certificate system to boost housekeeping morale—her work has led to higher satisfaction scores and she plans to continue in hospital administration after graduating in two years.  WAVY
