  • Nominations for the 2025 Community U.P.L.I.F.T. Awards are open until Friday, Aug. 29—Norfolk residents may nominate an individual, civic league, community group, business or faith-based organization making a positive impact. Award honorees will be celebrated at the Neighborhood Expo on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Northside Park.  City of Norfolk

CRIME NEWS

  • Norfolk police are investigating an officer-involved shooting on the 8300 block of Meadow Creek Road—near Liberty Military Housing and no injuries or victims have been reported.  13 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 10,000 families in Virginia face a growing waitlist for quality child care, a need detailed in a report by the Shovel Ready Virginia Task Force. Virginia Business Roundtable chairman Mike Chinn said the system is broken — tuition does not cover costs — and that better staffing and higher pay must be part of the solution.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since July 1, the City of Norfolk has offered two hours free parking in 14 garages to make downtown easier to visit. After the free hours, standard meter rates will rise by $0.50 per quarter hour and a business validation program will offer a 50 percent discount for longer stays—drivers should check posted signs for details.  City of Norfolk
  • The Virginia Chapter of the American Planning Association awarded Norfolk’s NFK2050 Comprehensive Plan the 2025 Old Dominion Award for Innovative Approaches on August 8th. The plan was recognized for its creative community engagement strategy and pioneering planning efforts.  City of Norfolk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Affordable Care Act premium tax credits may expire by year's end, and roughly 400,000 Virginians using Marketplace plans could face higher insurance premiums. Eight insurers propose increases from 3% to 40% for 2026, and about 100,000 people may be priced out — a change that could raise concerns over more uninsured patients.  13 News Now
