CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Virginia State Police charged 39-year-old Victor Martin Mendez with following too closely after a car crash on I-64 near the I-664 interchange on July 30 that killed a 2-year-old passenger and injured another—investigators continue to examine the incident. 3 WTKR
- ➤ Norfolk Police charged a Chesapeake man with malicious wounding, four counts of attempted malicious wounding, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony after a 17-year-old boy suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound at 880 North Military Highway on Monday night — officers responded to Sentara Leigh Hospital around 9:35 p.m. and the investigation remains ongoing. 13 News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A report from SCHEV shows that tuition and fees at Virginia’s public colleges are rising this fall—VCU and VSU nearly by 4.5% while Norfolk State increases by 2.3% as average costs climb just over $29,000. The study also says students pay only 42% of these costs, prompting some to consider community colleges to save money on a four-year degree. 13 News Now
- ➤ Norfolk School Board members asked for an extension on their school consolidation plan that could close 10 schools, repurpose 5 and rebuild 3 after a March resolution set an Aug 1 deadline. The board will host two sessions on Aug 9 at the Norfolk Scope and aims to submit the final plan by Sept 19 — a move meant to fully incorporate community and stakeholder feedback. 13 News Now
- ➤ Old Dominion University will roll out 11 autonomous robots for food delivery on campus in collaboration with Starship Technologies and Grubhub—each robot will use artificial intelligence to navigate, cross Hampton Boulevard, and deliver orders from eateries including Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Panera Bread, Qdoba, and Steak 'N Shake even in rain and snow. 3 WTKR

- ➤ City crews placed 13,000 cubic yards of sand on Norfolk’s East Ocean View beach to rebuild dunes and limit erosion, officials said. Public Works monitors the shoreline twice a year and will reintroduce native plants in winter — residents are asked to keep off the dunes and clean up trash. 13 News Now

- ➤ USNS Laramie returned to Naval Station Norfolk Tuesday morning after an eight-month deployment supporting U.S. and allied naval forces. The oiler completed 77 replenishment-at-sea operations that delivered fuel and supplies to 50 U.S. Navy ships — 15 coalition vessels, while families gathered at the pier for a celebratory homecoming. 13 News Now

- ➤ CHKD is celebrating 20 years of its Buddy Brigade pet therapy program—starting with seven dogs that grew to 41 to comfort patients at its main hospital and centers in Norfolk, Newport News and Chesapeake.
