COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Community 1st team held a ribbon cutting for a new basketball court at Young Terrace Calvert Square on Sunday—this project ended an 18-month effort to bring a court to an area that had lacked one for over 20 years. Local partners and city support helped complete the effort, and the team plans to build 7 more courts in Norfolk neighborhoods.  WAVY

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday, Accomack County deputies searched for 22-year-old Miles Porter McIntyre after Onancock Police reported him missing—his body was later found in local waters and sent to the Norfolk Medical Examiner's Office for review.  13 News Now
  • On Saturday, Norfolk police said that a fight between two men led to gunfire outside Food Lion on Tidewater Drive at 8:20 p.m. — no one was injured.  3 WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk is inviting freelance artists or graphic design firms to design a logo for its 125th anniversary that must include the words 'Virginia Zoo in Norfolk' and the number 125 — applications are due by Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. and results will be shared by Sept. 17.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Norfolk Public Schools announced that all children enrolled under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs will get a free nutritious meal at breakfast and lunch every school day under the Community Eligibility Provision—no meal application form is needed.  City of Norfolk
  • A personal branding class titled 'Stand Out by Being Yourself' is scheduled for Aug. 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. in Norfolk and will teach the Know+Show+Grow method to help participants build their work identity; registration ends on Aug. 10.  City of Norfolk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews in Wards Corner began demolishing the old Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center after its closure on March 28. The City of Norfolk supports the $68M project that will include a gym, library, 25-yard pool, lazy river, and splash pads and plans to open the new facility in Fall 2027.  3 WTKR
  • Old Dominion University and the city of Norfolk will open the new Maritime Autonomous Systems Test Site on Friday, Aug. 8 at the Willoughby Boat Ramp — the event runs from 9:30–10:30 a.m. and ODU president Brian O. Hemphill will speak while attendees view the 18-foot research vessel, The Mayflower.  WAVY
