  • If approved, the $85 billion merger of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern railroads will create the first transcontinental railroad while dropping the Norfolk name. Former Norfolk Southern CEO David Goode said he would be sorry to see the name go + he hopes local rail traditions will be preserved.  WAVY

CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded to a report of a suspicious package near the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on the 1500 block of West Ocean View Avenue at about 10:45 a.m. Friday—bomb squad officers examined the item and confirmed it was safe before the tunnel reopened.  WAVY
  • The inmate classification manager — Tashonna L. McKinzie, 49 — was arrested Tuesday, July 29 around 2:30 p.m. on charges of possession with intent to deliver fentanyl, conspiracy to violate the drug control act and possession of a firearm while PWID fentanyl in Norfolk and Virginia Beach and was later released on bond.  WAVY
  • A person is fighting for life in the hospital after being shot in Norfolk’s Young Terrace area at 10:20 a.m. on the 400 block of Nicholson Street Friday.  3 WTKR

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Solar installers in Hampton Roads are racing to finish rooftop panel work before the federal tax credits end on Dec. 31—businesses like Convert Solar and Solarize Virginia report a surge in calls as homeowners aim to save about $9,000 on average. Customers must act fast with some sign-up deadlines extended through Aug.15 and orders needed by mid-October.  WHRO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Navy’s largest global exercise is underway at Norfolk from July 30 through August 8 with nearly 880 sailors training using virtual tools that mirror real operations—reserve sailors and international partners from Japan and Canada are also involved in the drill.  WHRO
