- ➤ HII CEO Christopher Kastner said wage increases that took effect on June 16 helped hire 2,400 experienced workers at the Newport News shipyard building new Ford Class carriers—improving efficiency—despite delays caused by a skilled labor shortage. - ➤ A Norfolk man was arrested on July 29 for several car break-ins at Water Country USA after deputies responded on July 12 to reports of broken windows and stolen wallets that were later used for fraudulent purchases — investigators are still looking for additional suspects. WAVY
- ➤ A parking garage at Norfolk International Airport was placed on lockdown Thursday after officials received an unconfirmed report that someone was armed with a gun—police are now investigating the incident. 3 WTKR
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting as early as overnight Aug. 3, motorists on I-64 in Norfolk will see traffic shift from inside to outside lanes between Patrol Road and Tidewater Drive for the Hampton Roads Express Lanes project. Temporary ramp closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.—with signed detours in place—will remain until mid-2026 as construction continues. City of Norfolk
- ➤ Today, Norfolk International Airport is closing its Daily East Surface Lot to regular vehicles as crews start roadway improvements—oversized vehicles and those with existing reservations may still use the lot. Officials urge travelers to use one of the four parking garages and note that a four-way intersection east of the Norview Avenue bridge will be completed by winter 2026-2027. 13 News Now
- ➤ Lawmakers are investigating if Virginia should move from annual to even-year elections as a Joint Subcommittee met last week to gather ideas before drafting legislation next year.
