- ➤ Zuri Askew, a Norview High graduate and rising sophomore at North Carolina A&T, won a $2,500 scholarship and developed a design to create green space at the empty Coronado School to revitalize her Norfolk neighborhood. Her proposal 'Reclaiming Coronado'—which includes a community garden, playground, bike rack, trees and a renovated basketball court—aimed to offer a safe outdoor space for local residents. WHRO
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Local business owner Coleman Ferguson from Virginia Beach said he plans to build a 20,000-seat arena for big concerts and sports events without city funding — he aims to raise $80 million from local investors and already has $4 million in pledges — as he discusses using city-owned and private property for the project. Ferguson added that he hopes this new plan will succeed where earlier efforts failed due to reliance on public support. WHRO

- ➤ WHRO-FM will air Leonard Bernstein’s double bill this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.—it will present 'Trouble in Tahiti,' a satirical one-act opera on suburban life, and 'A Quiet Place,' a reflective full-length opera on grief and reconciliation. The program comes from the Royal Opera House in London. WHRO
- ➤ Tomorrow at 9:00 p.m., WHRO-FM's ‘A Local Touch — Music with a Virginia Connection’ will mark the 80th anniversary of the USS Indianapolis sinking as host Raymond Jones invites composer Stephen Melillo to the Williamsburg studio to discuss his tribute piece honoring survivors, families, and those lost at sea. The program will also feature music performances that reflect the story of the ship and the courage of its people. WHRO
- ➤ Virginia Humanities at WHRO announced winners from a new grant program that supports local museums, libraries, historic sites, and cultural nonprofits in Hampton Roads. The program awarded up to $6,000 per project and a total of $113,193 to 24 organizations—winners were honored at a WHRO reception last week. WHRO

- ➤ HRT is hosting two Student Freedom Pass Palooza events to help teens ride free on buses, ferries, and light rail—one event is on August 7 at Hampton High School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the other is on August 9 at the YMCA on Granby in Norfolk; staff and a teen commission will guide students through the sign-up process. - ➤ Norfolk Fire-Rescue will open job applications for interested candidates on Aug.1 and accept them until Aug.11. An open house will be held on Aug.2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the NFR Training Center at 7120 Granby St. — the starting salary for new firefighters after October will be $57,142. WAVY
