Norfolk’s Generic Theater is converting the Scottish Rite Room inside the Masonic Temple on Granby Street into a black box stage for its season starting in November—after 18 years at Chrysler Hall, the nonprofit is reusing existing chairs to cut costs.

Norfolk officials announced that the former MacArthur Center will be redeveloped to reconnect downtown streets, add a grocery store, housing, and central green space.

Negotiations continue with master developer Hg80 Real Estate and demolition is set to begin between late 2027 and early 2028 & design work will follow.
