COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The nonprofit 757 Creative ReUse Center in MacArthur Center is facing severe air conditioning problems—creating hot, humid conditions that make it unsafe for employees and visitors. Executive Director Beth Dryer said the center has closed on extreme heat days, spent most of its cash reserves on salaries, and will fundraise to move if repairs, now rescheduled for tomorrow and Saturday, do not fix the problem soon.  WAVY
  • WHRO-TV is off the air today while crews carry out emergency repairs to its transmission system—viewers can still watch programming on Cox, Verizon FiOS, DirecTV, and WHRO digital platforms.  13 News Now

  • A trailer hitch detached and crashed through a windshield on I-64 near exit 284A/I-264 at 8 p.m. Sunday — seriously injuring a woman as Virginia State Police search for a white Ford Super Duty pickup truck.  3 WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Norfolk Historical Society opened an exhibit at Historic Fort Norfolk that shows how the 1808 fort became a Civil War prison camp guarded by African American troops—original graffiti from jailed blockade runners is featured on the Officers’ Quarters' second floor. The exhibit uses images, videos and firsthand accounts to share the fort's layered history.  WHRO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Salvation Army is preparing its annual Write Stuff campaign to provide school supplies to K-12 students in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth. The program will hold distribution events on Aug. 8 from 4-7 p.m. at the Hampton Roads Kroc Center (Norfolk) and Portsmouth Corps and on Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Kroc Center (Norfolk), and families must show an unexpired government-issued ID, proof of address, and the child’s birth certificate.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Coast Guard announced it has renamed its districts by replacing numbers with geographic names — the Fifth District is now the East District — as part of Force Design 2028 that began on May 21st. The change does not affect district boundaries.  WAVY
  • A four-day design workshop ended Thursday for the estimated $1 billion Calvert Square and Young Terrace transformation as developers and Norfolk residents shared input on housing options — including for seniors and families — flood control and community safety. Officials said they will create an official master plan this fall while addressing concerns about the transition period.  WAVY
  • The Norfolk Planning Commission approved the first phase of a flood wall project near Water Street open space adjacent to Harbor Park to protect the area from flooding—work between the Berkley Bridge and the Harbor Park baseball stadium includes relocating power and water lines with demolition set for this fall. Construction of the flood wall will begin in 2027 as part of the five-phase Resilient Norfolk project targeting future storm impacts and rising seas.  3 WTKR
