- ➤ Trial for Camari Warren — charged in connection with the fatal September 2023 shooting of NSU student Jahari George — began July 16th after a delay in jury selection, with the Commonwealth presenting five key witness testimonies while Warren’s attorney argued another person was responsible. 3 WTKR

- ➤ The 25th Annual Norfolk Latino Music & Food Festival will take place on Saturday at Town Point Park from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.—it will celebrate Latino culture with live music by headliner Freily eL F’ and offer family-friendly activities and food from Puerto Rican, Mexican and Cuban traditions. Participants can enjoy dance lessons, mini-soccer pitches, board games and arts and crafts at vendor booths. WHRO

- ➤ Old Dominion University senior Olivia Brown was named one of 16 nationwide for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship from the American Chemical Society Division of Organic Chemistry—an honor that comes with a $6,000 Pfizer grant and recognizes her work on a sustainable method to improve antibiotics. She presented her research in May and June and will meet other recipients in September to share her work at Bristol-Myers Squibb in San Diego. WAVY

- ➤ Researchers from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science studied a tiny parasitic worm that feeds on blue crab eggs and found that its presence can help signal which crabs may produce more offspring— a key insight as Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab numbers hit near-record lows. The study published July 16 shows that the worm does not affect crab meat quality for consumers. WHRO

- ➤ Gilbane Development has been selected to lead a $1 billion redevelopment of Norfolk's Calvert Square and Young Terrace by replacing aging public housing with over 1,000 new units on 55 acres + modern mixed-use community spaces.
