Researchers from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science studied a tiny parasitic worm that feeds on blue crab eggs and found that its presence can help signal which crabs may produce more offspring— a key insight as Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab numbers hit near-record lows.

The study published July 16 shows that the worm does not affect crab meat quality for consumers.
