  • Residents in the Young Terrace and Calvert Square communities are hopeful that a $1 billion redevelopment will create safer, modern mixed-income neighborhoods with more green space and amenities—Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority is hosting feedback sessions at The Murray Center today and later this week to guide the master plan before work starts in 2027.  WAVY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 96-year-old bedridden Norfolk woman's ceiling collapsed at her Stuart Circle home on June 30 after a poor HVAC job, leaving water damage that rendered her hospital bed unusable; contractors repaired the ceiling but did not fix the water-damaged floors, and her family is now seeking legal help.  3 WTKR

  • 456 Fish – a popular restaurant in Downtown Norfolk – closed on Saturday, July 12 after more than 20 years of service. Its four sister restaurants will remain open for local diners.  WAVY

CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday morning, a camera captured Norfolk police taking a man into custody in Calvert Square, as on Sunday a SWAT team had searched for a suspect after Dion Melton was fatally shot and on Thursday Erica Wright was shot dead in her home with suspect Shaiqui McKesson charged—while developers gathered to plan redevelopments and Councilman John Paige urged new community programs to improve safety.  WAVY
  • A grieving father demands justice after his son Dion Melton was fatally shot near Calvert Square, marking the area's second fatal shooting in a week—police said they will boost patrols as they continue investigating with no suspects in custody.  13 News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rains in Norfolk have caused flash floods that force drivers to seek alternate routes as traffic slows and roads flood; officials warn against driving through rising water. The city is partnering with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a Coastal Storm Risk Management Project — set to roll out in phases over the next decade to lessen future flooding risks.  13 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Last week, a Norfolk judge ruled that the city charter gives the City Attorney power to prosecute local ordinance violations in Circuit Court—this decision arose from a dispute between City Attorney Bernard Pishko and Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi over cases such as a night curfew violation and a new shoplifting law. The ruling sets a legal precedent while deepening the conflict over which office will handle misdemeanor cases in Norfolk.  WHRO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Norfolk nonprofit Project ORF, working with the Norfolk Community Services Board and former councilmember Danica Royster, will host Surviving Through Mental Health on July 17—5 p.m. to 9 p.m.—at Chrysler Hall to address how family trauma can fuel mental health struggles across generations. The free event during Minority Mental Health Awareness Month will feature panel discussions, one-on-one sessions with mental health providers, and resource booths to help guide those in need.  13 News Now
