Good morning, Norfolk. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 13th of July.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Norfolk School Board meeting on Monday proposed tearing down Ghent School to build an $11 million football field for the new Maury High School while the board listened to PTA concerns about safe playground access—the current playgrounds and courts will remain until summer 2028. The board set phase 2 plan approval for winter, with construction beginning as early as summer 2026 and the new school opening by fall.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Spirit of Norfolk vessel now lies beneath the waves off Florida after a fire ended its service on the Elizabeth River nearly three years ago; it was moved from Colonna’s Shipyard after all passengers and crew were safe and was sold for $740,000 along with another vessel. Okaloosa County officials say the new reef gives marine life a home (and will attract divers and fishermen).  3 WTKR
