BUSINESS NEWS

  • Norfolk International Airport recorded a record 11,522 passengers boarding flights on Sunday, July 6 as most travelers returned after Fourth of July getaways in Hampton Roads. President and CEO Mark Perryman said the boost—up from under 10,000 last year—is driving plans for terminal expansion, a new rental car facility, federal inspection services, a hotel and a new hangar for private aircraft.  WAVY

CRIME NEWS

  • Virginia State Police said that at 11:57 p.m. on I-64 eastbound near Indian River Road, driver Anthony Jones—55—entered a coned-off work zone and struck construction worker Steven Hagee, 44, who was cutting concrete, leaving him with serious injuries while Jones faces multiple charges including DUI and reckless driving.  3 WTKR
  • A Newport News man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and firearm use charges in connection with the January 2023 killing of 18-year-old Aonesty Selby on a hiking trail in Isle of Wight County—Selby's family will testify at his sentencing on November 24.  13 News Now
  • A man and a woman pleaded guilty to breaking into Norfolk self-storage units on 35th St. on Oct. 26 — they used a bolt cutter to steal items including a World War II-era service rifle — with the man sentenced in May and the woman set for sentencing later this month.  WAVY
  • A U.S. Navy memo revealed that on May 29 a second sailor was reported missing from Naval Station Norfolk at the same time Seaman Angelina Resendiz was last seen in her barracks—both cases are now under investigation.  3 WTKR
  • A Chesapeake man was arrested in Virginia Beach after he drove his 2016 Honda into a coned-off work zone on I-64 late Wednesday night, striking a construction worker and causing serious injuries—he now faces charges including DUI and reckless driving.  13 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Army said it will combine the Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Eustis with Army Futures Command into a new unit, with an execution order expected in August to provide details. The merger will begin in October and end in 2026—Virginia Sen. Warner has expressed concerns over its impact on the local force.  3 WTKR
