The Downtown Norfolk Council announced that the 39th annual Grand Illumination Parade will use the theme Winter's Glow to bring a warm holiday light to Downtown Norfolk on November 22 at 7 p.m. Applications for floats + marching bands, animal brigades and motorized displays must be submitted by Sept. 14 with early bird entries due by Aug. 17.

An overnight shooting in Norfolk injured one person at the intersection of St Pauls Boulevard and Virginia Beach Boulevard at around 1:30 a.m.—police said.

Zuri Askew, a rising sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, received a $2,500 Sandi Fuqua Scholarship from Whitley Law Firm in Raleigh, an award honoring Ms. Fuqua’s 26-year legacy that supports Askew’s work in creating outdoor spaces for Norfolk communities (her efforts include volunteering to distribute fresh produce to underserved neighborhoods).

Norfolk plans to break ground later this fall on its $2.6B flood wall project to protect the city from severe coastal flooding—construction in downtown between Berkley Bridge and Harbor Park will create a wall with public trails and updated engineering to ensure lasting safety.
