- ➤ The Downtown Norfolk Council announced that the 39th annual Grand Illumination Parade will use the theme Winter's Glow to bring a warm holiday light to Downtown Norfolk on November 22 at 7 p.m. Applications for floats + marching bands, animal brigades and motorized displays must be submitted by Sept. 14 with early bird entries due by Aug. 17. - ➤ An overnight shooting in Norfolk injured one person at the intersection of St Pauls Boulevard and Virginia Beach Boulevard at around 1:30 a.m.—police said. WAVY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Zuri Askew, a rising sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, received a $2,500 Sandi Fuqua Scholarship from Whitley Law Firm in Raleigh, an award honoring Ms. Fuqua’s 26-year legacy that supports Askew’s work in creating outdoor spaces for Norfolk communities (her efforts include volunteering to distribute fresh produce to underserved neighborhoods). - ➤ Norfolk plans to break ground later this fall on its $2.6B flood wall project to protect the city from severe coastal flooding—construction in downtown between Berkley Bridge and Harbor Park will create a wall with public trails and updated engineering to ensure lasting safety. 13 News Now
