- ➤ After losing her daughter in 2019, Kim Bianchi started the Bean's Way Foundation to teach water safety lessons to young children—her nonprofit has already educated over 200 kids. The organization will host a Bean's Way Fun Run on August 16 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex to support drowning prevention efforts. 3 WTKR
- ➤ The City of Norfolk and the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority are transforming the old Tidewater Gardens into Kindred, a mixed-income neighborhood with 714 housing units and a People First program offering career, education and wellness support. Over $100 million in grants backs the project, which will finish its housing and infrastructure work by 2027 or 2028 and add a 22-acre park designed to reduce flooding—an effort to invest in both homes and lives. 13 News Now

- ➤ Norfolk police are investigating a fatal shooting on Friday around 1 p.m. in a parking lot near the Metropolitan Funeral Home on Fife Street—one man was killed and a second injured after a Portsmouth family’s funeral, with investigators following active leads. 13 News Now
- ➤ Heather Cummings pled no contest to second-degree murder after she killed her 81 year old mother at a Norfolk nursing home and was sentenced to 40 years in prison as part of a plea deal that dropped further charges. 13 News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ School leaders and lawmakers met at Norfolk State University last week to discuss how switching from a funding formula to block grants could lead to significant cuts for local school divisions. Suffolk schools faced an $11.3 million loss, while Newport News is set to lose $700,000—lawmakers plan to reconvene on Aug. 14 to determine next steps. WHRO
