- ➤ WHRO-FM is kicking off its countdown to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with the launch of Lara Downes’ 'Classical Americana' program—airing every Thursday at 9 p.m. through July and August on WHRO-FM 90.3. WHRO
- ➤ Communities across Hampton Roads will host Fourth of July celebrations featuring fireworks, live music and parades, and Norfolk’s Town Point Park event is set for July 4 from 5 to 10 p.m. — the event offers military brass bands, food vendors and a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. 13 News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Norfolk Public Schools leaders held two public meetings Thursday — one at Booker T. Washington High School from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and another at Granby High School from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. — to discuss a preliminary plan that recommends closing 10 schools, repurposing five, rebuilding three and renovating one, and the plan still awaits a vote by the school board. 3 WTKR
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Last month, 21-year-old Navy sailor Angelina Resendiz went missing from Naval Station Norfolk and her body was later found in a wooded area; now senators Tim Kaine — and Mark Warner are calling for a full investigation to give her grieving family answers. 3 WTKR
- ➤ Angelina Resendiz’s body was returned to her hometown in Texas with full military honors on June 20 — but her mother said her remains were found covered in dirt, maggots and bugs. The family’s attorney and U.S. Senators Warner and Kaine have questioned the Navy’s handling and promised further inquiries into the preservation process. 13 News Now
