CRIME NEWS

  • According to police, a person died after a shooting in Portsmouth’s 2100 block of Elm Avenue on Wednesday—officers arrived at 5:18 p.m. and closed streets near the Elm Avenue and Jefferson Street intersection while another victim was taken to a local hospital.  WAVY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Virginia Black Film Festival in Hampton opens today with Juneteenth celebrations that include a beach party at the Paradise Ocean Club and a concert at Fort Monroe + a Black business expo scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. More than 50 films, panel talks and hands-on workshops will run through the weekend with screenings set for The American Theatre, Hampton University and 125 E. Mellon St., and a Charity Awards Gala will honor local talent such as Norfolk native Tim Reid on Sunday.  WHRO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • House lawmakers learned that if federal appeals fail, Virginia could face an $8 million gap for an attendance dashboard — a tool to combat chronic absenteeism — and teacher apprenticeship programs after the deadline was moved from March 2026 to March 28. The Virginia Department of Education is appealing for additional funds and seeking alternatives for tutoring services and school upgrades as it awaits a federal decision.  WHRO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Norfolk Mayor Dr. Kenny Alexander will serve as Vice Chancellor for Strategic Partnerships for the Virginia Community College System starting July 10 while keeping his mayor duties. The new position is designed to strengthen ties with business and industry — linking support for 23 colleges and aligning programs with local workforce needs.  3 WTKR
  • Food vendors with 20 or more locations in Virginia will soon stop using Styrofoam starting July 1 due to a law passed in 2021 that bans items like cups, bowls, and trays — schools and food programs are also covered. The ban will expand next July to all food vendors and violators may face fines of up to $50 per day — officials urge providers to switch to reusable or recyclable alternatives.  WHRO
